How Much Do Custom Cabinets Cost? By: Adam A.

If you're planning to remodel your kitchen or build a new home in Southern Utah, you might be wondering the daunting question,

“How much do custom cabinets actually cost?”

It’s a fair question - and an important one when planning your renovation budget.

At Prestige Woodworks, we’ve been designing and building custom cabinets in Southern Utah for over 12 years. When clients ask about pricing, I always give the same honest answer: It depends.

It may seem like we're avoiding the question, but that's just the reality of custom cabinetry design. Many factors influence the final price of your cabinets, including layout, door style, hardware, storage solutions, and one of the biggest factors of all: the wood species you choose.

Why Wood Choice Impacts the Cost of Custom Cabinets

The "Alder" Moment | Why Wood Choice Matters

I can still recall my early days in this industry, more than a decade ago. If you had asked me for a piece of Alder back then, I would have just stared at you, completely clueless about where to begin. To me, wood was simply "brown stuff" that gave you those annoying splinters.

Today, I know that choosing between Alder, Oak, Walnut, or Mahogany isn’t just about appearance - it’s also a financial decision that can significantly impact your cabinet budget.

In fact, the wood species you choose can affect the overall cost of your cabinetry project by as much as 14%.

The Baseline for Cabinet Pricing: Paint Grade Cabinets

To understand how wood species affect your budget, we first need a baseline. In the cabinetry industry, that baseline is Paint Grade cabinets.

Painted cabinetry continues to be extremely popular in modern kitchen design, especially in colors like:

  • Classic white

  • Navy blue

  • Forest green

  • Soft neutral tones

Because painted cabinets are consistently requested, we use paint-grade cabinetry as the “zero point” on our pricing scale when estimating projects.

Comparing Common Wood Species for Custom Cabinets

As we transition from paint to natural wood stains, your material costs begin to increase. Here is how some of the most common woods we use at Prestige compare to our Paint Grade baseline:

Knotty Alder

Knotty Alder cabinets are often among the closest natural-wood options in price to paint-grade.

This species is especially popular in Southern Utah homes because of its rustic charm, natural warmth, and ability to complement desert-style architecture.

Oak

Oak cabinetry is a timeless classic known for its durability and prominent grain pattern. It typically falls within the mid-range of cabinet pricing, making it a strong option for homeowners looking for natural wood without entering luxury price territory.

Mahogany & Walnut

Mahogany and Walnut cabinets are considered premium wood species. These woods grow more slowly and are often used in luxury kitchen cabinetry, which increases demand and drives up cost.

Because of their rich color and refined grain patterns, they are frequently used in high-end custom homes throughout Utah.

Why Is One Tree More Expensive Than Another?

It’s easy to assume that more expensive wood is "better" or "stronger." While durability can vary slightly, most of the price difference comes down to supply and demand.

If a specific species becomes the "it" wood on social media, in blogs, in magazines, or on HGTV, demand spikes! If that tree takes longer to grow or is harder to harvest, the cost goes up. It’s that simple.

Pro Tip: Mix Wood Species to Stay Within Budget

One strategy we often recommend to clients designing custom cabinets in St. George, Utah, is to mix materials strategically.

For example:

Use premium wood species in high-impact areas like:

  • The kitchen

  • The primary bathroom

  • The main living space

Then choose more budget-friendly materials in areas like:

  • Laundry rooms

  • Guest bathrooms

  • Mudrooms

This approach allows you to achieve a luxury look where it matters most while keeping the overall project budget under control. Your Dream Kitchen, Your Budget!

Designing Custom Cabinets Around Your Budget

At the end of the day, changing nothing but the wood species in your cabinetry design can shift your project cost by thousands of dollars. And wood selection is just one of the many selections you make when you’re designing a space tailored to you!

Other factors that impact your final investment:

  • Cabinet door styles

  • Drawer and storage inserts

  • Specialty panels and materials

  • Cabinet hardware

  • Overall kitchen layout

At Prestige Woodworks, we believe in complete transparency when helping homeowners design their custom homes. Our goal is to help you create a kitchen that looks incredible while making informed decisions about where your investment matters most without accidentally overspending where it doesn't matter. Because the best kitchens aren’t just beautiful - they’re designed intentionally around how you live!
